First Frame
The name of my magazine is ‘Turnt Up’ originating from slang
terms used typically in rap music videos meaning get loose, go wild, or Have fun. It is used in
Word play with literal meanings partially making it a popular word. My title
follows the conventions of a normal magazine because the title is written
across the page. This helps because it is the first thing you see instantly
informing you of what the magazine is called. I used the font Blackoak Std not
a conventional font but I think it gives significance from other magazines. The
colours of my masthead
blend well with my magazine’s colour scheme gold and black it also follows
conventions in rap as it replicates bubble writing graffiti. Even though my
masthead is not bright and colourful it stands out because of the stroke which
gives it a bold look contrasting from the other lines on the page.
Second Frame
My main
cover line on the middle left hand side of my magazine ‘GABZ YO’ is the name of
the model in my main image it is the largest text on the magazine after my
Masthead. With my cover line I am challenging the conventions of a rap magazine
because most rap magazines have their cover llines along the bottom of the magazine. I used
the same font as my masthead but changed the colour and the font size to differentiate its
importance on the page. I wanted to use the same font so it all blends
together and to make sure there is no contrast as I think it looks unorganised
but I made the text look like the font I used looks masculine mainly because a
majority of readers of rap magazines are male and the minority female. The
colour is simple and stereotypically males prefer simple to complex.
Third Frame
Analysing magazines my rap magazine follows the conventions
of a rap magazine, my magazine’s main cover model is black and this follows
conventions because hip - hop magazines generally feature renowned black men
from ghettos and in general America. Majority of rap magazines only feature one
main image showing a solemn expression to show e.g. authority, power, coolness,
so I have not challenged that convention.
Fourth Frame
The layout of text on my contents page follows the
convention normally used on the Q magazine using three headers, features,
regulars and reviews. This is so the audience understands what my content has
to offer on a more specific scale. I have laid out my page numbers according to
conventions which I think could not be challenged because co-ordination is
important in a magazine from beginning to end. Rap magazine conventions are not
complicated in this sense as most of the complexity in rap magazines is in the
content.
Fifth Frame
I have challenged the conventions of props in a rap magazine
as I have not clothed my model in typical clothes but just acceptable clothes.
I challenge this convention because, chains a typical iconic prop used for the
image of rappers in my opinion is a shallow convention not as important as the
others. My main image is wearing a snapback this conforms to magazine
conventions also having cornrows in his hair looking like a typical rapper.
Sixth Frame
To enhance my magazines appeal I have added advertisements
for the magazines social networking sites e.g. Twitter, Facebook. I have placed
the logo next to the name of our address on the site so readers can visit and
browse stuff to do with the rap genre and rap artists. I have placed them on my
front page because it will attract attention from the audience as twitter and
facebook are familiar conventions. Social networks are very popular, by putting
it in my magazine I have appealed to the readers’ social life. For example the
reader can discuss interests in the magazine, participate in activities and
make real life connections. Social networks are widely used by teenagers and
they are also target audience for my magazine. This will help the magazine to
become popular and heavily spoken about on social media. I would also be able
to communicate with the magazines audience.
Seventh Frame
My footer in my magazine explains extra parts of the
magazine. The footer shows readers extra information topics in the magazine.
The footer add to the readers interest like persuasion to buy the magazine.
Eighth Frame
My double page spread has a pull quote from the Rap artist
and a small text to relate the background image and his music. The pull quote
is an insight to the topic of the text about the rapper. The pull quote is a
famous lyric of the rapper also featured on the front page and this will
attract his fans to the magazine. Pull quotes need to be controversial or
intriguing and mine ‘we just turnt up till there is nowhere to turn’ is very
odd and not standard English. The pull quote I have used does not challenge
conventions and is very good for its use.
Ninth Frame
The colour scheme of my dps, contents page and front cover
look very good. Main colours used are orange black grey. They are dull but bold
colours. Bright colours are more for pop magazines so the colours in my
magazine suit my convention
