Evaluation 6

I have learnt about the influence the media has on us.
I used a variety of new applications I have never used before to create my magazine s and talk about them. I have used Photoshop, InDesign, Prezi and Blogger.
In photoshop I learnt how to edit my photos and create effects texts that I have never done before. I had little experience from previous task but now I feel really confident using it. I can confidently use it to make another magazine without guidance or instruction.
I did not like using indesign because it felt over complicated as it was similar to photoshop but harder to use because it had a lot of restrictions. I can now use it properly learning how to make a double page spread and learning special effects to do with text.

Prezi was really simple to use as this was my first time using it I did not have any problem with navigation or creating a prezi to produce information.

I constructed a double page spread in InDesign which is probably the most complicated programme I learnt to use. Because of my experience with Photoshop I was able to adapt quickly to the ways of Indesign because it is very similar but put into a different format and design. With my experience I’ll be able to create a book using Indesign.

This was second time working with Photoshop. I enjoyed using Photoshop because there wasn't a thing I couldn't do on it. It felt as if I could do anything I wanted on it. I found  it easy to manipulate and my magazine was produced as if it was professional. I learnt about the power Photoshop has to alter appearances.

Blogger what I am using now to publicise my work was easy for me to use. Everything on it was straight forward and easily manipulated. I also learnt how to make presentations on Flickr and Prezi but I didn't enjoy using them because I found them complicated. Using Blogger has cemented all my knowledge on blogs and I believe and use all blogging websites.

Evaluation 5

I think the most attractive conventions about my magazine are font and colour. The colours are all based on shades of gold and green. There are not a lot of contrasting colours which establish the simplicity and modern look to it. I have balanced the business of the magazines leading you to different things on my magazine in order from most important to least.

I felt like I needed to include as many features as possible relating to my conventions to attract my target audience. I bought rap magazines an picked up on all the main and minor conventions so I could incorporate them in my magazine. I needed to think about font, colours, and images following similar conventions of my rap magazines.

My front cover and contents page are eye-catching with my contrasting title designed to attract the viewer/reader's attraction. The font I used follows rap conventions of graffiti and will be easily read by its target audience. I have used artist’s names in the cover lines similar to the music genre of the magazine to draw the audience in. Using popular artists attracts readers of my target audience because my target audience gravitate towards well known artists. I also gave my main image a snapback to appeal to people who follow the fashion of wearing snapbacks. This also connotes my genre. The colours are quite calm and mellow which also helps target the audience to read with confidence.

Evaluation 4

The audience my magazine will attract will typically be Rap fans but I do not exclude other genres in my target audience as I believe rap can divided into many genres and it could appeal to many diverse social groups.

My magazine will appeal to the younger age as it tends to appeal to people of this age more than the elderly and young adults. I expect readers to have foreknowledge of rappers and the genre because interest normally so deprived from previous insight. The audience may be up to date with new artists and maybe also the old ones inspired these new artists. The audience usually relate to rap content so I expect them to be originating from urban areas. Rap fans tend to have insight to the personal lives of their favourites rappers and artists. It is seen in many Hip-Hop and Rap songs that the lyrics relate to its target audience of a lower class who are attracted by the urban culture and this is where Hip-Hop/ Rap originated from.

Generally rap is aimed at teenage boys to adults between the ages of 16 - 27. This is the target audience because a lot of people in that age bracket can relate to the music because they are of the age where they are heavily involved with women, partying, enjoying life, gangs, violence and just the stresses of life really

I have used an aspirational figure on the front of my magazine. My aspirational figure is on my magazine cover because he conforms to the rap conventions and will attract my designated audience e.g clothes, expressions, quotes. I have used positive language on my front cover to boost the appeal of my audience through use of adjectives, exclamatory expressions. My audience will be typically have a 9 - 5 job and be working class or lower middle class people. Rap points fingers at american establishments originating in the 1970s time of oppression and racism a basis of a lot of rap. Largest reason for a majority of raps' audience being black.

Evaluation 3

The source magazine covers hip – hop music, politics, and culture. It is the world’s second longest running magazine. It is known as the ‘Bible Of Hip-Hop’. The source is likely to distribute my magazine because they promote hip hop and being a long running magazine they would not alienate new ideas like my magazine. Vibe is a music and entertainment magazine. The publication is made up of a majority of R&B AND Hip Hop music, actors and entertainers. The magazine targets young people, urban followers of hip hop culture. The source and vibe are likely to distribute my magazine because of its hip hop/ rap content but also because I follow similar conventions to them.

Independent distribution companies would better suit my magazine because it is not the most popular genre and Rap is also very excluded from the converntions of other magazines.  The rap genre have independant fans so and indepandant distributor would suit my magazine and its image.

Choosing to use an independent label means the magazine can reach places where a mainstream conglomerate can not. Mainstream conglomerates distribute to majrities ot minorities. Mass media is distinguished from local media and it only reaches large markets. rather than the entire population. Indpenedant companies tend to have unknown artists and Mainstream tend to have renowened artists who have won awards and are expected to be in films. Independant distributors target smaller audiences.

Evaluation

First Frame

The name of my magazine is ‘Turnt Up’ originating from slang terms used typically in rap music videos meaning get loose, go wild, or Have fun. It is used in Word play with literal meanings partially making it a popular word. My title follows the conventions of a normal magazine because the title is written across the page. This helps because it is the first thing you see instantly informing you of what the magazine is called. I used the font Blackoak Std not a conventional font but I think it gives significance from other magazines. The colours of my masthead blend well with my magazine’s colour scheme gold and black it also follows conventions in rap as it replicates bubble writing graffiti. Even though my masthead is not bright and colourful it stands out because of the stroke which gives it a bold look contrasting from the other lines on the page.

Second Frame

My main cover line on the middle left hand side of my magazine ‘GABZ YO’ is the name of the model in my main image it is the largest text on the magazine after my Masthead. With my cover line I am challenging the conventions of a rap magazine because most rap magazines have their cover llines along the bottom of the magazine. I used the same font as my masthead but changed the colour and the font size to differentiate its importance on the page. I wanted to use the same font so it all blends together and to make sure there is no contrast as I think it looks unorganised but I made the text look like the font I used looks masculine mainly because a majority of readers of rap magazines are male and the minority female. The colour is simple and stereotypically males prefer simple to complex.

Third Frame

Analysing magazines my rap magazine follows the conventions of a rap magazine, my magazine’s main cover model is black and this follows conventions because hip - hop magazines generally feature renowned black men from ghettos and in general America. Majority of rap magazines only feature one main image showing a solemn expression to show e.g. authority, power, coolness, so I have not challenged that convention.

Fourth Frame

The layout of text on my contents page follows the convention normally used on the Q magazine using three headers, features, regulars and reviews. This is so the audience understands what my content has to offer on a more specific scale. I have laid out my page numbers according to conventions which I think could not be challenged because co-ordination is important in a magazine from beginning to end. Rap magazine conventions are not complicated in this sense as most of the complexity in rap magazines is in the content.

Fifth Frame

I have challenged the conventions of props in a rap magazine as I have not clothed my model in typical clothes but just acceptable clothes. I challenge this convention because, chains a typical iconic prop used for the image of rappers in my opinion is a shallow convention not as important as the others. My main image is wearing a snapback this conforms to magazine conventions also having cornrows in his hair looking like a typical rapper.

Sixth Frame

To enhance my magazines appeal I have added advertisements for the magazines social networking sites e.g. Twitter, Facebook. I have placed the logo next to the name of our address on the site so readers can visit and browse stuff to do with the rap genre and rap artists. I have placed them on my front page because it will attract attention from the audience as twitter and facebook are familiar conventions. Social networks are very popular, by putting it in my magazine I have appealed to the readers’ social life. For example the reader can discuss interests in the magazine, participate in activities and make real life connections. Social networks are widely used by teenagers and they are also target audience for my magazine. This will help the magazine to become popular and heavily spoken about on social media. I would also be able to communicate with the magazines audience.

Seventh Frame

My footer in my magazine explains extra parts of the magazine. The footer shows readers extra information topics in the magazine. The footer add to the readers interest like persuasion to buy the magazine.

Eighth Frame

My double page spread has a pull quote from the Rap artist and a small text to relate the background image and his music. The pull quote is an insight to the topic of the text about the rapper. The pull quote is a famous lyric of the rapper also featured on the front page and this will attract his fans to the magazine. Pull quotes need to be controversial or intriguing and mine ‘we just turnt up till there is nowhere to turn’ is very odd and not standard English. The pull quote I have used does not challenge conventions and is very good for its use.

Ninth Frame

The colour scheme of my dps, contents page and front cover look very good. Main colours used are orange black grey. They are dull but bold colours. Bright colours are more for pop magazines so the colours in my magazine suit my convention

Final Double Page Spread

I am happy with my dps it is what i envisioned. It is simple and sleek.
